Focusing on the soul and the deepest forms of a person’s psychic and emotional functioning, the author examines and illuminates the well-known myth of Oedipus from a new perspective, finding the cause of his evil destiny not in incest, but in the ancient crime of his father Laius.

Based on this story, the play itself prompts viewers to re-examine and re-question their own myths.

The word of the Director

Myth (Mythos) – a real or fictional narrative (story) that addresses the consciousness of a people through certain social and cultural patterns or strong collective feelings (including prejudice, etc.).

At a time when narratives of any kind begin to take over the primacy of society, and society itself begins to blindly follow them, we need mechanisms that deconstruct or question these narratives. This is exactly what Armando Nasimento Roza does in his “One Oedipus” mythodrama. A work that, in its essence, re-examines ancient myths and questions the characters in them in ways we have never had the opportunity to see before. Roza takes the characters of these great myths out of context – Jocasta, Oedipus, Tiresias – and places them in the context of “afterlife”, in other words, timeless and contemporary /universal.
