ABOUT THE PLAY

Ice Cream is a comedy about life and about experiences that every woman and every man in the audience can relate to. Exciting, witty, and convincing, the play follows the lives of a mother and daughter – from the day the daughter starts kindergarten and the mother begins her first day at work, all the way to the day in a nursing home.

One after another, scenes unfold about love, women, men, family, and children. Ice Cream is a theatrical treat that, whether you want to or not, you will have to taste. And there is no point arguing about taste.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Miro Gavran (Gornja Trnava, 1961), playwright and fiction writer.

He is the most widely performed contemporary Croatian playwright. His works have been translated into more than 30 languages, and around 250 productions have been staged in theatres around the world.

He has received some twenty literary and theatre awards both in Croatia and abroad, including the Central European Time Award (1999), presented to outstanding Central European writers for their lifetime achievement. He is the only living playwright in the world to have a theatre festival dedicated exclusively to his work, Gavranfest, which, after being launched in Slovakia, moved to Poland.

He has published seven novels and eight books for young readers. He is the screenwriter of the film Grandma and Grandpa Are Getting Divorced, while his most frequently performed plays include: Creon’s Antigone, Night of the Gods, The Loves of George Washington, Chekhov Said Goodbye to Tolstoy, The Longest Day of Maria Theresa, Kings and Stablemen, Shakespeare and Elizabeth, Dr. Freud’s Patient, My Wife’s Husband, When an Actor Dies, Forget Hollywood, All About Women, Drivers for All Time, Hotel Babylon, How to Kill the President, No Laughing Allowed, and Nora Today.

He was the founder and resident playwright of Epilogue Theatre, and in 2002, together with his wife, actress Mladena Gavran, he founded GAVRAN Theatre.

He lives and works in Zagreb.

DIRECTOR’S BIOGRAPHY

Spasoje Ž. Milovanović (Kruševac, 1971), Master of Theatre Studies, specializing in Theatre Studies.

As a playwright, dramaturg, director, and theatre scholar, he collaborates with leading theatres, festivals, theatre journals, and publishing houses in Serbia, the region, and Canada.

He is a permanent theatre critic for the Third Programme of Radio Belgrade and a contributor to the most prominent theatre journals in Serbia and the region.

He is a member of the Union of Dramatic Artists of Serbia, the Presidency of the Association of Serbian Playwrights, the Association of Serbian Writers, the International Association of Theatre Critics and Theatre Scholars, and PEN Canada.

He was a dramaturg at Kruševac Theatre and Director of Drama at the National Theatre in Belgrade. Since 2018, he has served as Director of the National Theatre in Niš.

At the recommendation of Theatre Alberta (Edmonton, Canada), he received the honorary title of Ambassador of Theatre Alberta, as well as the national “Golden Badge of the Cultural and Educational Community of Serbia” for his outstanding contribution to Serbian culture.

He is a certified court expert in dramatic arts, and the only person holding this qualification in the Republic of Serbia.
