In this comedy, set in Šibenik in 1920, Ivo Brešan drew inspiration from the ideas of Shakespeare’s plays The Taming of the Shrew and Life Is a Dream.

The plot begins when a student named Lujo decides to conduct a psychological experiment to see whether it is possible to convince a man that he is someone he is not, or that his entire life is merely a dream. The innkeeper Tafra joins him in carrying out the plan, seeking revenge on the merchant Prebanda, who refused to let his younger daughter Cvita marry Tafra’s son Dunko.

To achieve their goal, they involve their friends in a game of mistaken identities, as well as a stranger and drunkard named Bagara, whom they present as a young count. Thus, an extraordinary story unfolds around Prebanda and his family, filled with witty twists and comic complications. Running parallel to this plot is another storyline – the story of Katica, Prebanda’s older daughter, who cannot find a husband because of her hot temper.

Throughout the play, however, Brešan also explores a philosophical question – the relationship between dreams and reality, which in turn raises questions about human nature and the essence of identity.
