Great success of the National Theater in Niš in its 135th year of existence

In the year in which it marks its 135th anniversary, the National Theater in Niš performed 96 programs on its home stage: 8 premieres – Some Like It Hot, Hasan-Aga’s Wife, The Liberation of Skopje, La Guerilla, Carmen, Night-scented Stock, Barbelo, About Dogs and Children, the Affair of the Innocent Annabelle, 12 guest appearances by other theaters on the stage of Niš National Theater, 57 reprise performances. Also, the 3rd festival of Theater and Drama of the Balkan Cultural Space “Theatre at the Crossroads” took place, in which 6 performances participated in the competition program, 1 performance at the official opening of the festival, 1 in honor of the awardees and 10 supporting programs. In addition to all this, the National Theater in Niš has toured 22 times in other cities in the country and abroad (Bulgaria, Romania, North Macedonia, Montenegro) and participated in 11 festivals and won 7 awards. For the next year, the production of 10 new titles is planned – A Dream of Homeland, the Seed, Master and Margarita, Decameron, Doll Ship, Koštana, Chicken, Pork in 178 Ways, Ai Carmela, The Magic Flute.

After decades of efforts to obtain a Small Stage venue for the Niš National Theater, towards the end of this year, the first works on the long-awaited construction began. Completion of the works is expected in October 2023.

Recently, the vehicle fleet was completely renewed by purchasing a new cargo vehicle, a light transport vehicle and a passenger car, and in the future the theater will be able to carry out the activities necessary for its daily functioning without hindrance.

In addition, in this year, the theater completed the installation of the fire protection system and fire alarms, as well as the installation of video surveillance.

After 3 successful productions of the “Theatre at the Crossroads” festival, the city of Niš recognized its importance, and at the Assembly of the City of Niš, session it was decided that the festival “Theatre at the Crossroads” would receive the status of a manifestation of importance in the field of culture for the city of Niš. This decision will greatly improve the city’s cultural scene, and the fourth edition of the international festival, which unites the Balkan cultural space, is expected in September 2023. This time, the festival dates are moving precisely because of the construction of the Small Stage venue of the Niš National Theater.

In the jubilee year, the National Theater in Niš was awarded the Sretenje Order of the first degree “for special services to the Republic of Serbia and its citizens in the field of culture” by decree of the President of the Republic of Serbia on February 11, 2022.

As a great recognition for our work, at the session of the City of Niš Awards Commission on December 29, a decision was made that the National Theater of Niš, as one of the proposed collectives, will receive the highest recognition of the City of Niš, the “11^th January” award.

At the end or at the beginning, all these successes would not have happened without the audience of the National Theater in Niš.
